The Heckler Award

Eligilibity: The funds for this award were provided through an endowment established by the Heckler family. The amount of the award is approximately $1,000 per year.
This award recognizes the accomplishments of a graduate student who is a resident of the State of Missouri and whose research is focused on some aspect of farm crops, soils, or animal husbandry (in relation to production agriculture). Award nominees must be graduate students within the graduate programs of Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, or Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences. Each of these three programs may nominate two students for the award.

Nomination Process: Nominations must be made by a faculty member within the graduate programs of Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, or Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences. The nomination package shall include:

  1. A letter from the faculty member that includes a description of the student’s accomplishments, departmental service, and other attributes that qualify them as an outstanding graduate student.
  2. A letter from the nominee that addresses his/her academic and research accomplishments
  3. The nominee’s curriculum vitae. The information in the CV would include educational background and grade point average, publications, teaching and/or extension contributions, honors and awards, and leadership activities.

The nomination materials must be in electronic form and delivered by email. Nomination packets should be submitted to the Graduate Dean’s office by March 15.

Evaluation: Nominations will be reviewed by the Directors of Graduate Study from Animal Sciences, Pant Sciences, and Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences. Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of demonstrated excellence and lasting impact in the following areas:

  • Outstanding contributions to research, extension, or teaching
  • Academic achievement
  • Leadership activities
  • Mentoring to peers and/or undergraduates
